Dexter Dingus: @Robert, I would think aircraft constantly being hit by waves in a hurricane would cause water damage. They are not submarines.
Manie Labat: First, the carrier would try to maneuver itself away from the storm (with the help of the radar). But if it is unavoidable, all Flight Operations would be shut down and all aircrafts would be chained down to the deck in the hangar below. The Navy regulates the limit of how strong wind speed is and how high the waves are before it is unsafe to operate Flight Ops.BTW, I don't think the hangar can be, completely, full (all Navy aircrafts on the carrier can be folded to save space). But if it is, the aircrafts would be tied down to the deck up top (and the maintainers would pray that they don't get too damaged for them to fix later)....Show more
Raelene Cunnick: Depending how far ''SAFER WATERS'' or a ''PORT'', ''HARBOUR'', is and if the ''STORM'' is obtained on their ''RADAR'', etc., the ''AIR CRAFT CARRIER''! , as all other ''WARSHIPS''; is more than ''SEAWORTHY''!!!! How would you like to be serving in/on a ''MINESWEEPER'' and ''SAILING/STEAMING'' to ''MURMANSK, RUSSIA'', during W.W.II; in the ''WINTER OF 1944''? A good question!!!
Adrian Sherlin: I was an ABH for 6 years so this is EXACTLY what we do. We pump the bay till it's full. We then take the rest of the aircraft back to the fantail creating a "weave" and we tie them down for severe weather(12-16 chains). It's a whole lot of fun moving aircraft during heavy seas lol talk about nerve racking...have a 60k lb F18 tanker and the tractor moving it start sliding sideways across the flight deck, get your heart pumping! The aircraft do not get "ruined" in the storm lol what makes you think 100mph wind would ruin a plane that travels at 1000mph?..they just have to be washed of the salt water and they're ready to fly again! Been through two hurricanes on the Reagan!Edit*For everyone talking about all the planes fit in the h! angar bay...they DO NOT all fit in the hangar bay. Bay 3 is ha! lf full always with a supply pile and bay 1 has a lot of equipment in gear in it leaving it half full always. So that leaves only about 2 bays worth of space. Considering an E2C2 takes up a lot of space and there is 3 or 4 of them on every carrier...You're lucky if you can fit half the planes on a carrier in the hangar bay at any time. Oh and we do not avoid storms we go through them. It's faster to go through a storm than go around a storm and the rain water cleans the flight deck and weather decks. It's a win win....Show more
