Questions about Home Theater (Audio)?

Robt Heemstra: stop kissing your dads *** and get him a mug like everyone else

Delphine Cajka: EDIT: I'm focusing mainly on the speaker systems between the $250-500 range.

Mikel Bethay: It depends a lot on what speaker systems your talking about, and what size they are... I've found as a general rule you can tell a lot by the weight of the speakers, speakers that weigh more tend to have larger magnets in the drivers and also the cabinets are better built so go to best buy and pick the speakers up and see which are the heaviest....you can tell a lot about quality just from the weight,

Wilfred Santacruce: Stop - many of the all-in-one systems are crap. They are DVD players with cheap attached speakers. We get 20+ people here asking how they can hook other things up to their 'systems' - only to be told how much they gave up for the low price.Go to Amazon and search for "Onkyo Home Theater" and you will find some systems that are decent starting about $380! . The important thing in a box system to get are:* A full sized AV receiver with lots of spare inputs.* A separate subwoofer that is self-powered (has an AC power cord)* 5 monitor style speakers. Now you can add a BluRay player from nearly any company or a Media Server like a Roku unit, they can run the optical output from their HDTV to the receiver for 5.1 sound from TV shows, etc. They can upgrade just the sub or just the AV Receiver or just the speakers without tossing the entire system. It's a bit more money than the crappy $199 systems - but you gain a lot of value....Show more
