Chris Coggins: Many black students struggle with their identities because history is taught from a European prospective. The fact that most of us don't know the complete history of African people demonstrates that Eurocentric education has infused your education. This type of education isn't flawed necessarily, unless those being taught are not from European ancestry. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a European frame of reference. However, it becomes extremely problematic when you're not European, and you're forced to take on a frame of reference that is not naturally you. Then one is oppressed.Because they are taught from a European perspective, black males have the highest drop-out rates, because they don't identify with their education.Students usually are taught only about the history of African people during the time when they were slaves in the United States and during the civil rights movement. Some blacks don't want to claim their heritage because of the way edu! cation represents their past. Blacks may actually start to feel inferior through education.Black students feel oppressed, and this makes them less outgoing on campus.Because some blacks aren't educated fully in school about their heritage they are searching out an identity. What has become 'black culture' is not black culture at all. It is a culture that is in search of an identity in an America that has muted its growth.Blacks need to learn more about their heritage so they are able to move forward.I think it's extremely important for African Americans to reclaim their historical frame of reference.Without that reference we will continue to meander in search of it.The lack of education affects discussions about multiculturalism.Without African Americans having a sense of identity, they can't even talk about multiculturalism They just spout out what they've been taught from the Eurocentric perspective.Because blacks aren't given enough background information from an African-! American perspective, ...Show more
Toshia Metzker: Toynb! ee predicted that the next big influence on the West would be from Asia. You can see that today, especially on the West coast. So it would be smart to adjust our education to focus more on Japan and China, for example. This deficiency has been known to educators for a long time.
