Dorris Homola: Bachelors = 4 yearsMasters = 8 yearsand Music in education = teaching musicwhile just Music = musician
Beau Starcevic: A master of music in education prepares you to teach music in elementary, middle or high schools. The bachelor's degree in music will focus on performance and theory, but unless it has education courses incorporated into degree requirements does not give you a teaching credential.
Warren Kotter: First, the Bachelor of Music (BMus, BM, BME) is a type of degree and not the major. (just like the Bachelor of Arts isn't a degree in "Art"). Though it will be some sort of music, the major/concentration could be music ed, music performance, music history, piano pedagogy, conducting, composing, music technology, and a number of other areas. This is different than the Bachelor of Arts in Music (BA) or the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Music. The same is true of the Master of Music (MMus, MM, MME). The example you give is in music ed! ucation. This is different than the Master of Education (MEd) or the Master of Arts (MA).A bachelor of music in music ed and a master of music in music ed will both qualify you for a K-12 certificate to teach music in the public schools. The key is the music ed major/concentration. A bachelor of music in jazz studies will not qualify you to teach in the public schools.Note: unlike other subjects, music is a K-12 certification area. Music teachers are certified for all grades. The difference is in level of training and years to completion. You will need to already have a bachelor's degree in order to begin the master's. The bachelor's takes 4-5 years (yes, a BMus can take a full five years, especially in music education) and the master's will take another 1.5-2 years.Public school teachers with a master's degree tend to earn more than do bachelor's degree teachers. The master's degree holding band directors also tend to get schools with better band programs....Show mor! e
